Inspire Program Volunteer (Scienteer)

Project Description:
The Inspire Program focuses on public school students in underrepresented neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia. Currently, we are working in five elementary schools in West Philadelphia. The volunteer opportunity we offer is to become a Scienteer. Scienteers are a dedicated group of working scientists, engineers, and graduate students who volunteer their time to mentor young students and motivate them to pursue an interest in science. Scienteers share their first-hand knowledge of cutting-edge developments in their fields, inspiring students to explore all of the possibilities science has to offer. Scienteers bring science to life by closely mentoring science fair groups, making in-class presentations, giving career lectures and judging science fair projects.
Skills Category:
Education
Additional Skills Required:
Scienteers must hold a college degree (at minimum) in a science-related field. You can sign-up directly at http://ipraxis.org/scienteer_registration.asp Time commitments: To be a science fair group mentor, we ask that you are able to commit for at least 1-2 hours each week for a 6-8 week period. This consistency will provide a deeper connection to the students. There are opportunities to mentor multiple groups in different schools. For career lectures or in-class presentations, time commitments are more flexible as these occur only a few times per school quarter. Science fair judging occurs towards the end of the school year and there will be five fairs to judge.
