Volunteer Tax Preparer
Project Description:
| |
Volunteer to help low-income families reach financial stability
In 2009, 700 AccountAbility Minnesota volunteers helped 17,000 Minnesotans receive $28.8 million in cash refunds. AAM's tax volunteers are among the most highly trained in the country and help accomplish the organization's goals efficiently and with a human touch.
WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
As a Volunteer Tax Preparer, you will help low-income families and individuals file their federal and state returns using tax software. Training is provided, but some tax experience is helpful (at minimum you should have experience preparing your own taxes). You will volunteer with a supportive team of 10 volunteers - some new like yourself and others very experienced - and be supervised and supported by an AAM staff person.
WHO WILL I BE HELPING?
AAM volunteers help individuals facing daunting hurdles in filing accurate and timely returns due to language, educational, cultural and accessibility barriers. In 2009, 67% of AAM's Twin Cities' metro area customers were from communities of color and a full 24% described themselves as a person with a disability. Metro area customers also reported 61 different primary languages.
TIME AND COMMITMENT: Volunteering takes place from the last week of January through April 15, 2010. Volunteers work one 4 hour shift per week during the tax season. Evening, daytime and Saturday volunteer shifts are available. TRAINING: Volunteer training takes place in January.
LOCATIONS: AccountAbility Minnesota operates 12 tax sites across the Twin Cities metro area.
What will I get in return?
• Free in-depth training on individual tax preparation (training is in January).
• Develop new skills and gain valuable experience working with AAM's customers, volunteers, and staff.
• Make a direct financial impact on the lives of low-income families.
