Reach to Recovery Volunteer
Project Description:

We are looking for breast cancer survivors who are willing to volunteer their time to support current breast cancer patients during their cancer journey. We require that all volunteer-visitors be one year past their most recent treatment for breast cancer. Exceptions are made for those receiving hormonal therapies. Survivors who have experienced a recurrence or metastasis will be evaluated individually

Initial qualifications for basic volunteer training:
· Treated for breast cancer
· Recovered from breast cancer surgery and, if applicable, post-reconstructive surgery
· One year past most recent treatment, excluding hormonal therapies
· Exhibits relevant personal characteristics:
1. Emotionally well-adjusted and physically well
2. Empathetic
3. Articulate
4. Well groomed and otherwise suitable in appearance to make face-to-face contacts
· Complete volunteer application process
Qualifications for initial certification:
· Complete Reach to Recovery Volunteer basic training ("certification")
· Complete "buddy" visits and/or other supervised contacts
· Receive approval from Regional Volunteer Coordinator and/or trainer to initiate independent contacts
Qualifications for re-certification:
· Complete re-certification training every 2 years in accordance with Division policies
· Demonstrate effectiveness in patient contacts (as measured by patient feedback or other Division assessment methods)
· Comply with guidelines and policies of the American Cancer Society and Reach to Recovery program
· Accept and complete assignments in a timely manner, including follow-up contacts and documentation
