Project Description:

Empowering for Academic Growth and Leadership Excellence (EAGLE) is a 25-week after-school mentoring program designed to provide academic, social, and recreational enrichment to Haitian-born high school students, from grade 9th through 12th. The primary goal of the program is to empower students to realize their full potential by becoming successful professionals in the field of their choice. Students are taught and learn life skills that will prepare them for higher education and their future career. The program consists of four core components: Literacy, mathematics and science, college and career readiness, and health and wellness. Each component teaches life skills and provides cultural and social transition support. Supplemental academic instruction is provided by teachers certified in English, math and science to support low-performing students. High-performing students receive accelerated academic support and enrichments. The program is subdivided in two (2) council groups in order to provide more targeted support to students and their families. First, the Youth Leadership Council is composed of high-performing seniors who are trained to provide academic assistance to low-performing students. Second, the Parent Advisory Council focuses on parent engagement and helps parents to navigate the school system and various community resources available to them. Through partnerships with other community organizations, families are engaged in monthly workshops and seminars. Topics include relationship development, nutrition and fitness, and financial and college planning. Students are served a healthy snack during each session. The program operates three days a week, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Student activities are held at Stamford High and Westhill High from 2:15 P.M. until 5:15 P.M. Monthly family workshops are hosted at Schilo Family Services center in the evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Transportation from the program to students’ home is provided.
