Self Employment Preparer

Project Description:
Self-employment tax preparers prepare state and federal tax returns for AccountAbility Minnesota (AAM) customers who are either independent contractors or sole proprietors running their own business. Major responsibilities • Prepare federal (includes Schedule C) and state tax returns using tax software for self-employed customers to determine their profit or loss from their business or service • Work cooperatively with staff and other volunteers to provide high-quality service to customers • Maintain strict confidentiality, providing as much privacy as logistically possible • Follow guidelines and procedures outlined in AAM’s volunteer training manual Impact The impact of a tax preparer’s work is immediate. Preparers help customers navigate the tax system to claim the tax benefits they have earned. This can be life altering for customers who are not aware that they qualify for these tax credits. For the self-employed tax returns can be daunting as customers must identify income and expenses in order to complete their returns. Our self-employed tax preparers provide an essential service to a sometimes confusing process and help put customers on the right path with their basic finances and taxes. Benefits of volunteering • Gratifying volunteer work – assisting customers that need the expertise • Free in-depth training on self-employment tax issues and preparation • Develop new skills and gain valuable experiences working with AAM’s diverse customers, volunteers and staff
