Teen Court Attorney Trainer

Help make a difference by becoming a Teen Court Attorney Trainer! The purpose of this volunteer position is to train high school students to serve as attorneys for youth-led hearing sessions in which a juvenile offender, who has admitted guilt, agrees to receive a sentence for a crime committed. The goal of the Attorney Trainer is to assist student attorneys in seeking restorative justice and determining the most appropriate sentence for the juvenile offenders.
Attorney trainers teach students to write opening and closing statements, question witnesses and serve as effective advocates for the defendant, the victim and the community. Specific duties include:
* Review the police report provided by the Teen Court staff
* Assist student attorneys in the development of opening statements, witness questions and closing arguments
* Assist the student attornerys in identifying mitigating and aggravating circumstances
* Assist the student attorneys in applying Restorative Justice to the cases
* Review the student attorneys' completed work and approve for court
* Attend the corresponding hearing session and support the teen attorneys during the case presentation
* Communicate with the Youth Justice Supervisor regarding students' progress
* Participate in periodic evaluations of volunteer and agency performance
