AmeriCorps Tax Preparation Assistant

Project Description:
Start Date: January 9, 2012 End Date: April 30, 2012 Hours Per Week: 20 Position Summary: Preparation (Prep) Assistants will be responsible for the tax preparation portion of the Alternative Filing Method(AFM) process. Position Duties: • Become familiar with and well-versed on the history and mission of Frontier and VITA • Execution of the prep portion of the AFM process • Receipt and review of remote taxpayers’ documentation • Interview remote taxpayers’ via phone to verify information contained on Intake and Interview sheets • Prepare tax returns based on the information obtained during the phone interview process • Perform quality review of completed returns • Mail, scan and email, or fax completed returns to intake sites • Electronic file transmission of signed tax returns to the IRS • Assist with overflow tax preparation for Colorado Asset Building Coalition (CABC) VITA sites as needed • Travel to tax intake and prep sites and other locations as needed • Participate in National Service Days and other AmeriCorps activities as required • Work evenings and weekends as needed

Training Requirements: • Complete 40 hours of IRS VITA training – January 9th-13th, 2012 in Golden, CO (lodging provided) • Complete AFM training • Complete AmeriCorps training • Complete Life After AmeriCorps training • Participate in on-going on-the-job training Requirements: • Must be able to work efficiently and productively with minimal supervision • Must be able to adapt to unexpected changes in work, timelines, etc. • Must be extremely organized and able to multitask without being micromanaged • Tax preparation experience preferred, but not required • Must be 18 years of age or older • Must have high school diploma or equivalent • Must be a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States • Must have working knowledge of computers, the internet, and email • Have access to reliable personal transportation Benefits: • Education award of $1,175 upon successful completion of 300 service hours • Student loan forbearance of qualified student loans during period of service • All training required for position is provided by the program • Mileage reimbursement for service related travel
